Sunrise ~ Elwood, Utah ~ December 11, 2010

Clouds pour off the Wasatch Front while the sun peaks over the mountains this morning as Dallas and I took our walk. The view is to the southeast and my mother's house is in the far lower left of the photo, just beneath the sun flare. You can see smoke rising from our neighbor's chimney on the horizon to the right of the sun flare, the temperature was about 32 degrees.

Each of our days here is enriched with the overwhelming beauty of the natural world.
Yesterday afternoon found us under the splendid sky pictured above while this morning a family of deer graced the orchard outside mom's dining room windows.

Two Views Of Yesterday...

Rainbow Over Lucerne Valley - Monday, 9:48 A.M

One of my obligations as a friend and neighbor is to take Cheri, who lives across the street from us, down the mountain to her monthly doctor appointments. Cheri owns a car but she's disabled and cannot drive herself.
Yesterday I drove her down to Victorville for an appointment and we were treated to this breathtaking view as we came down the Cushenbury Grade, just below the Mitsubishi Cement Plant, and descended into Lucerne Valley.
It was snowing heavily when we left Big Bear Valley and made our way slowly through a white-out of wind-blown powder as we skirted Baldwin Lake (normally dry) and then began winding our way down a very slippery Highway 18 toward the Mojave Desert.
When we came around the last bend, where the narrow pass finally opens to the desert, snow and clouds gave way to a big desert sky being cleansed by fierce winds. A fine mist blown from the clouds behind us allowed the landscape to be decorated with the magical whimsy of a rainbow, of sunlight refracted through atmospheric water.
Oh, the Blue Planet!

We got between 6 and 8 inches of new snow Sunday night and Monday, but it was somewhat difficult to estimate that measurement because the wind was blowing so hard that the snow piled up in uneven drifts.

Mountain Monsoon Sunset

A beautiful sunset closes a perfect day of desert hiking, thunderstorms, mountain bluegrass music and a bar-b-que buffet with margaritas. Posted by Picasa

Desert Downpour

On the way out to Morongo Valley Bill & I encountered a bit of flash flooding and then, on the way back home to Big Bear, we stopped to admire this desert downpour during one of my very rare road trips.
Just minutes after this was taken we were being drenched with sheets of cool & fragrant desert rain. Posted by Picasa

Monsoon Sky

Monsoon skies over Earth Home Garden today at 6:05 P.M.

Last Friday we had 3 to 4 inches of rainfall and hail here in 1 1/2 hours with lesser thunderstorms on Saturday.

Clouds are building again today with more thunderstorms forecast for later in the week.

This is "mountain weather" and one of the reasons we love living here so much.

Winsome Wednesday!

Looking west from the north shore of Big Bear Lake Wednesday morning at 6:17.
The sunlit tree covered slope jutting into the lake from the right is Juniper Point and the shoreline facing us from there is a popular fishing spot.
Note the moon still high in the sky in the upper left corner.

Looking East at 5:56 A. M.

I went out extra early this morning hoping to catch a colorful sunrise.
There were lots of great clouds today but not much color to them.
I did see a beaver in the marsh though, the first one I've seen since the lake refilled.
There used to be two of them in permanent residence here before the marsh dried up several years ago.
Beavers aren't native to Big Bear, they were introduced during the past century by white men like me, who aren't native here either.
For me, the beavers are a nice addition to the Bear Valley habitat, but I have yet to find anything else worthwhile about the white man's contribution to this ecosystem.
I haven't seen any eagles the past couple of days, but there are still some pelicans around, and I saw a cormorant this morning too.

Changing Weather...

Click photo to enlarge
Cloud formations over Bear Valley today at 6:47 A.M.
Hopefully we'll get some more moisture from this approaching weather system that seems to have us directly in it's sights.
These clouds were a beautiful sight in person this morning and almost seemed to have a woodgrain pattern to them.
The photo didn't capture that well.

The larger dark cloud spread across the lower middle of the picture looks to me like a soaring bird (not the right beak for an eagle though). Posted by Hello
