We had 3 horrible quakes where we live Jim - but nothing like the poor people of Christchurch! Their nightmare goes on and on, with over 250 aftershocks (since the big one which was the same magnitude as Haiti!) Many of the after shocks are over 5 magnitude. Last night they had 11 quakes overnight! Their nerves are frazzled. Terrible!!

Dear Kiwi-

We haven't heard too much on the news here since the initial quake but I did a little checking up on NZ news this morning and read that you've had 717 aftershocks in the past couple of weeks.

Believe me, living within a few miles of the infamous San Andreas Fault for my entire life has provided me with some harrowing earthquake experiences and I have a pretty good idea of what you're going through.

Our last big one was in 1992 when we were awakened about 5am by the 7.3 Landers quake centered about 25miles from here (as a crow flies) followed 3 hours later with our own 6.5 quake right here in Big Bear. Most of the masonry buildings and chimneys in the valley were destroyed and the aftershocks went on for months.

Everyone was on edge for a very long time...

Did you have any damage at your place? I hope things start calming down soon.

It's been pretty quiet here, seismically speaking, since the early '90s, but for the past year or so we've been experiencing clusters of small temblors again.

Anyhow, our hearts reach out to you Kiwi, we know what that's like firsthand.

Love,

Jim & Peg
