Bee Heaven...

Grinnell's Beardtongue (Penstemon grinnellii) is known locally as Bumble-Bee Penstemon but in actuality I see many more Honey Bees visiting the flowers. The flower opening seems to be a bit snug for Bumble-Bees but occaisonally I do spot a smallish individual way inside one of these.

On this plant, our first Bumble-Bee Penstemon to bloom this year, one particular flower faces north, with the morning sun backlighting the interior, allowing me to capture a well lit and detailed close-up.

Pentsemon grinnellii's maroon stripes are somewhat like airport runway lights in that they guide pollinators directly to the pollen.

tdharma-

I thought it was a nice shot...

anonymous-

I would appreciate it if you would attach your name to political commentary posted here, especially when it's off topic.

This 'comment' would have been more appropriate as an e-mail to me or as a response to one of my political rants.

As for the content of your 'comment', I'll say this.

Yes the U.N. is just as dysfunctional as the rest of the bureaucracies of today's 'civilized' world, including the extremely dysfunctional government of the United States Of America, where our president was installed by a coup, through voter fraud, orchestrated by his own brother and legitimized by a Supreme Court loaded with beholden right-wingers.

The U.N. has been very ineffective as a world governing body mainly because of the veto power of a few nations. A quick look at the UN voting record shows that 3 countries, The US, Great Britain, and Israel routinely vote against the hundred and some other member nations, effectively canceling their votes with our veto power. This is especially true with human-rights issues, which is exactly why we are no longer part of the human-rights commission.

As for bloated salaries and corruption, you can also use the Western Economic Model to explain that travesty. How much did the boys at Enron rake in every year before they got caught with their pants down? And look at the salaries of all the other overpaid CEO's that still run America, and the rest of the world, through the shady backdoors of our false 'democracy' which is really no more than world imperialism run by an elitist oligarchy!

Where was the U.N. when America illegally bombarded Laos in the largest bombing campaign in the history of the world (dropping more tonnage of bombs than were used in all of WWII)?

Millions of innocent people, including women, children and the elderly were indiscriminantly murdered in violation of every universal moral treatise ever signed by this or any other nation.

If America didn't have veto power over the UN, we would have been brought to justice for war crimes and other human rights offenses many times over by now, and perhaps we would have learned to become a team player.

The U.N. definitely needs reform alright and the very first thing that needs to be done is to revoke any and every nations veto power over another member.

Now, if you don't mind, I'm going back into our garden where the inhabitants pratice a possibly less 'civilized' but far more equitable and sustainable form of co-operation than the human species has been able to devise.

Enjoy your day...

Amen.

Back to the flower, if I may....

The way the light shines through puts me in mind of stained glass. It's a chapel for bees, Father Jim presiding.

Oh Dearest Mum-

My cheeks were burning because of the big smile on my face, you always say the right things, and my response to your comment was all tongue in cheek too.
